‘It is a GREAT film,’ Tavernier enthused. POISON PEN PLAGUE It was Bertrand Tavernier, the French film critic turned publicist for Jean Pierre Melville turned acclaimed director, who introduced me to Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1943 WWII masterpiece ‘Le Corbeau’ aka ‘The Raven’ (Blu-ray, Criterion Collection, Not Rated). Maybe that depends on the box-office – and Styles’ interest in films versus his musical career. She did not address the question whether she and Styles would work together again. I believe in disruption as a necessary tool in society. But the film is intentionally provocative. Katie and I always say we believe in ‘Trojan horse films.’ On the outside we want it to be absolute entertainment. But we also want this film to be incredibly entertaining. I hope it makes people think and question the system that serves them. I think we have to continue that conversation. I don’t think unfortunately there ever will be a time when controlling someone’s body is not something relevant. This kind of thing has existed throughout history. OLIVIA WILDE: I think the thing about this film is that it’s unfortunately very timely and also timeless. COPS N ROBBERS MINE MINI GAME MOVIEAnd do you and Harry plan to make another movie together? Q: Do you then see this coming out in this election year in the United States with Republicans as basically the major metaphor here for trying to control women? Especially in this movie. I asked Wilde about the political implications of her feminist film which has a few echoes of ‘The Stepford Wives.’ which has both ‘Darling’ and Pugh’s currently filming epic ‘Dune 2.’ Here is the link to the abbreviated Venice ‘Darling’ press conference: Gemma Chan, from left, Harry Styles, Sydney Chandler, director Olivia Wilde, Chris Pine, Florence Pugh and Nick Kroll pose for photographers upon arrival at the premiere of the film ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ during the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy, Monday, Sept. Pugh did show for the red carpet, again reportedly, under pressure from the studio Warner Bros. Pugh and Wilde, it’s widely reported, have either a strained relationship or none. Oh! We might mention that missing from the press conference was the film’s leading lady Florence Pugh who plays Styles’ sexually satisfied wife and rebelliously carries the show. His presence made that press conference (which also included co-stars Gemma Chan and Chris Pine) ‘the hottest ticket’ at the festival. It was Styles who has mostly disappeared off the Venice press conference footage he was the focus of most of the questions. Which strangely, bizarrely, echoes what happens in ‘Darling’ when anyone asks questions that aren’t supposed to be asked: They disappear. While Venice holds both its press conferences and red carpet events with first rate professionalism and posts them online, the ‘Darling’ press conference is censored with most of it removed, disappeared. When she faced the press for the sci-fi thriller’s world premiere at September’s Venice Film Festival, Wilde was composed, articulate and seated as far from Harry Styles, her leading man on and offscreen, as possible. ‘Don’t Worry, Darling’ as Olivia Wilde’s second directorial feature has both traditional box-office elements and a major spritz of scandal (might that be traditional as well?).
